Bunny X is the awesome duo of Abigail (on the left) and Mary (on the right).
1- Where did you grow up?
Abigail: I grew up in Sterling, VA and Mary grew up in Bronx, NY. We always call each other country mouse and city mouse, respectively haha.
Mary: The Boogie Down baby!
2- What is one of the first songs you remember liking as a kid?
Abigail: I have a distinct memory of begging my mom to buy Madonna’s first self-titled release for me. I just knew I needed to have it after hearing “Lucky Star” on the radio. I also have fond memories of listening to “Angel of the Morning” by Juice Newton while sitting in the back seat of my mom’s station wagon. She would sing along to it and I remember that gave me a really peaceful feeling as a small child.
Mary: “Voices Carry” by ‘Til Tuesday and “Take Me Home'' by Lisa Lisa & The Cult Jam.
3- What influenced you to get into music?
Abigail: Well, before Bunny X came into being, Mary and I sang back-up vocals in a friend’s band and were involved in a few cover band projects - we were even in a Queen cover band called Dairy Qween (hehe). That was a lot of fun but after a while I got to thinking it might be nice to pen some original material so around 2009-2010, we started dabbling in songwriting. It definitely didn’t happen overnight, as you can see, but eventually we found our way.
Mary: Music was always my happy place. I listened to all kinds of music all the time!
4- At what age did you start playing/singing?
Abigail: I was in chorus in high school so I guess that’s more or less when I started learning how to actually sing properly and harmonize but it wasn’t until much much later that I got into music in a more serious way.
Mary: I went to a private school in Manhattan, and it was a requirement that students learn to play an instrument, so I chose the violin. I was 9 at the time :)
5- If you could go back in time, what advice would you give to yourself after finishing school?
Abigail: I’d say don’t be afraid to try new things and take risks, whether it’s learning an instrument, taking a trip to a far off destination, quitting that soul-crushing gig or trying a new career or hobby out. It’s never too late to try something new.
Mary: Honestly, I didn’t get into music until much later, so I would tell myself don’t worry, it’s all gonna work out.
6- What are some of your favorite songs at the moment?
Abigail: Oh god there is so much amazing music out there, especially in our scene. I feel really sorry for people who don’t know about synthwave/retrowave. Poor things! As for me, I’ve been obsessing over Male Tears’ new album and find myself listening to “Future X” quite often. I love Laura Dre’s track “I Wanna Be Your Only One,” “Heaven” on SelloRekt / LA Dreams’ brand new album Cherry Vice, “Can’t Wait” feat. JJ Mist by The G, “Wait For You” by Roxi Drive and SelloRekt / LA Dreams, Sferro’s track “Modular Origami” feat. Mecha Maiko, “Young and Wild and Free” by Syst3m Glitch and “So Blue” by FM Attack but honestly I could keep going on and on. In fact, here I go: I also love "Robot Lover" by Vandal Moon and LAU's beautiful ballad "What It Takes." I could keep going but I will stop now.
Mary: These songs came out a little while ago now I guess but I still have “Elegance & You” by Korine on repeat all the time and “Kill for Love” by the Chromatics. Also, “Magic” by FM Attack never gets old.
7- Do you listen to your own music?
Abigail: It’s pathetic but yes, yes I do. I also wanted to make sure the new album was the best possible version of itself so boy did we listen to those mixes over and over haha.
Mary: Yes, and quite a bit lately during the mixing phase of our upcoming album Young & In Love. We’re super excited that it’s all done.
8- Which musician would you like to collaborate with next?
Abigail: It’d be a dream to collab with FM Attack ;)
Mary: Hmmm…we have a few collaborations happening at the moment…more on that coming soon!
9- What is one of your favorite memories so far in your music career?
Abigail: We had an amazing experience in Mexico City in 2015 when we performed with Italo legends like Fancy, Fred Ventura and Brian Ice. It was an incredible night and we were very honored to be a part of it. Another amazing memory is when we performed with NINA, LAU, Parallels and CZARINA for an incredible Ladies of Synthwave evening at the Knitting Factory in Brooklyn. Definitely wish I could go back and relive that evening.
Mary: We were asked to perform alongside a group of Italo Disco legends such as Fred Ventura and Fancy in Mexico City in 2015. It was so exciting to meet them and see so many people - 12,000 or so! - out in the crowd for the show.
10- What advice would you give to someone that is just starting to get into music?
Abigail: I’d say make the kind of music that you want to make. Don’t write for others and don’t write music that you think other people want to hear. Otherwise, your heart won’t be in it and you’ll have a hard time putting in those long hours on a project that just doesn’t move you.
Mary: Follow your instincts and keep on writing. Just see where the journey takes you!
