Let's Get To Know Melotika

Where did you grow up?

I grew up in the outskirts/suburbs of Montreal. As a young girl I lived in the south shore of Montreal, and later moved more north to Laval. My parents are separated so I also grew up partially in the city of Montreal.

What is one of the first songs you remember liking as a kid?

I remember LOVING Sometimes by Britney Spears, I Love Rock N Roll by Joan Jett, Thriller by Michael Jackson and Time Warp (Rocky Horror Picture Show)!

What influenced you to get into music?

Being exposed to classic music from the 70s and 80s definitely got me into music from the get-go. My father is a drummer and introduced me to amazing records like Journey, Styx, Jackson Browne, and so much more. My mom always says I started singing before talking, and dancing before walking. At what age did you start playing/singing?

I sang as a hobby my whole life. At the age of 11 I took up singing lessons for a year and never returned. I was a very shy girl. In high school, I attempted being part of musicals and bands and it all never worked out with my plagued mind and teen angst . Only later on I discovered I was actually decent at singing and had a huge desire to write pop songs and enrolled myself in a Music Production & Audio Engineering program in 2014 to learn all of that nitty gritty! It all kind of started from there!

If you could go back in time, what advice would you give to yourself after finishing school?

Don't do what other people tell you to do. Follow your heart and do what you truly want. What are some of your favorite songs at the moment?

I love the smash hit Blinding Lights by The Weeknd and Dua Lipa's Levitating. Such bops! It's been hard to get into music lately because artists are no longer creating concept albums or Ep's and just dishing out singles. I find myself listening to throwbacks in all genres jamming out to the 70s & 80s, Tool, Green Day, Metric, Portishead, Britney Spears, Madonna, & more!

Do you listen to your own music?

No!!!!!!!!!!!!! I mean sometimes I dive into the Melotika Playlist but I still cringe. For some reason it still feels surreal that my music is out.

What is one of your favorite memories so far in your music career?

I think it is right now. Even though we just had a pandemic and I haven't performed since March 6 2020, I checked something really important off my bucket list. My dream was to write a retro album/ep - which is now called Dancing Without You, what Melotika would be like in the 80s' with edge and a modern twist - and I did that over the pandemic and released all the songs. I feel that my song writing matured and I am starting to find my place. I am just getting started. What advice would you give to someone that is just starting to get into music?

Don't try to please others. For every hater you get 20 new fans. Music is meant to be fun at the end of the day.
